Board Vacancies

The Town of Auburn encourages and promotes involvement by residents in the decision-making process through participation in a variety of boards and commissions. Serving on a board or commission can be a rewarding experience and an excellent way to contribute to the quality of life of the community in which you live or work. We rely greatly on the interest and involvement of those volunteers who seek a more active role in the functioning of their local government.

PLANNING BOARD - 1 seat available - Associate

The Planning Board is responsible for guiding development of land and growth within the Town of Auburn, in accordance with the Zoning Bylaws, Subdivision Regulations, and professional guidance of various town departments. This includes Site Plan Review, ANR Plans, and Special Permits for commercial and residential developments and subdivisions.

The Planning Board consists of five full members, plus one associate member who participates in all matters before the Board in a non-voting capacity, unless a full member is not in attendance or unable to vote in accordance with State law. The Board meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm.

Disability Commission – 5 seats available

The Commission on Disability researches local problems of people with disabilities,  advises and assists municipal officials and employees in ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations that affect people with disabilities, coordinates or carries out programs designed to meet the problems of people with disabilities in coordination with programs of the Massachusetts Office on Disability, reviews and makes recommendations about policies, procedures, services, activities and facilities of departments, boards and agencies of the Town as they affect people with disabilities, provides information, referrals, guidance and technical assistance to individuals, public agencies, businesses and organizations in all matters pertaining to disability, and coordinates activities of other local groups organized for similar purposes. 

A majority of the five Commission members shall consist of people with disabilities; one member shall be a member of the immediate family of a person with a disability and one member of shall be either an elected or appointed official of the Town of Auburn. Commission members are appointed by the Town Manager, subject to the approval of the Board of Selectmen and meet one time per month. 

Library Board of Trustees Vacancy - 1 Seat Available

Please be advised that there is a vacancy in an existing term on the Auburn Library Board of Trustees that must be filled on a temporary basis by a joint vote of the Board of Selectmen and Board of Trustees in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 41, Section 11.  The person appointed to the seat shall be a registered voter of the town and shall perform the duties of the office until the next annual election, which is May 17, 2022. 

Thus, the Town is seeking applications from interested residents for consideration of this appointment. 

Interested residents can apply on-line using the Board and Commission application (fill in Library Board of Trustees under "Other") or in-person in the Town Manager's Office.  Applications are due by Friday, July 23, 2021.  Please send a resume as well if possible. 

The Board of Selectmen and Board of Trustees will schedule a joint meeting to vote on the appointment.   Interviews with candidates may be held prior to or during the joint meeting. 

There are six Library Trustees in Auburn. The Trustees currently meet on the first Wednesday of each month. 

The Town of Auburn Library Board of Trustees:

  1.  Adopts general, non-operational Library policies regarding the use of the Library and providing services to the public; 
  2.  Adopts Library Board procedures; 
  3.  Promotes the interest of the Library with the Town and its residents; 
  4.  Analyzes and considers community Library needs; 
  5.  Adopts the strategic plan for Library services to the community; 
  6.  Supports and seeks adequate funding for the Library from the Town and the community; 
  7.  Makes recommendations on the Library budget to the Library Director and Town Manager. 

Library Trustees are elected for a term of three years. This vacancy is for a seat that has more than two years remaining, expiring May 21, 2024.  The appointment to the vacant seat will run until the next Town election on May 17, 2022.  At the May 17, 2022 election, the seat will be on the ballot for the remaining two-year term to expire May 18, 2024.
